NVIDIA says RTX 5090 is not discontinued, but availability remains uncertain
Speaking at the RTX Spark Launch Party in Taipei, NVIDIA Senior Vice President Jeff Fisher officially denied rumors that the flagship GeForce RTX 5090 has been discontinued. While the company insists that shipments will continue, Fisher acknowledged significant supply chain constraints that may impact consumer availability.
Supply Constraints and GB202 Chips
Fisher's comments serve as a direct response to reports from multiple sources, including 4Gamers and PC Games Hardware, which suggested that NVIDIA had ceased allocating "GB202" GPUs to the GeForce line to prioritize AI-driven demand. While Fisher confirmed that manufacturing capacity is indeed limited, he emphasized: "NVIDIA is doing everything it can to bring products to market. Although there are other variants of the RTX 5090 chip, it has certainly not been discontinued. NVIDIA will continue shipping it. This is very important."
However, the discrepancy between official statements and industry reports remains notable. While the company may have adjusted its strategy following negative press, there is no official explanation for why numerous distributors and retailers reported a halt in new allocations. The reality of bulk purchases by AI companies suggests that individual gamers may not be the primary beneficiaries of the remaining production capacity.
The Pricing Gap
Even if production continues, the actual cost of acquisition is a major concern. The official MSRP for the RTX 5090 is set at $1,999 in the US and €2,099 in Europe. In practice, however, market conditions tell a different story; PC Games Hardware reported a minimum available price of €6,699 in Germany. This massive gap between the launch price and retail reality makes finding a card at MSRP highly unlikely for most consumers.
Furthermore, the situation is complicated by availability issues, with some major US retailers already delisting the card or marking it as 'not carried.' Without specific details from NVIDIA regarding future shipment volumes, the prospect of finding an RTX 5090 at its intended retail price remains highly speculative.
