NVIDIA DLSS 5 media embargo in place, LTT confirms video ready
NVIDIA appears to be actively preparing the media rollout for its upcoming DLSS 5 technology, with a strict embargo already in place despite the feature's official fall 2026 release window. Linus Tech Tips (LTT) has confirmed that they have signed an agreement covering the new generation of Deep Learning Super Sampling and currently possess a video ready for publication once restrictions are lifted.
The discussion regarding DLSS 5 emerged following recent leaks of the DLSS 5 Neural Rendering library found within the early access build of NBA 2K27. During the latest WAN Show, Linus Sebastian clarified that while his team can discuss information discovered independently from these leaked files, any specific details or demonstrations supplied directly by NVIDIA remain under embargo. As noted by Linus: "We did a video. There's screen cap. You'll see it once the embargo is up." This suggests that independent testing has already yielded significant insights into the technology's capabilities before its official public debut.
Linus Sebastian and his team at LTT have independently tested the leaked DLSS 5 library in several major titles, including Cyberpunk 2077 and Final Fantasy VII Rebirth. Their analysis revealed that the implementation exposes three distinct models and offers several developer controls. These controls include adjustments affecting color grading, tone mapping, and the overall strength of the Neural Rendering effect. The existence of these granular settings indicates a level of customization previously unseen in DLSS implementations.
The leaked implementation is proving to be more versatile than initially anticipated. As reported earlier this week, modders have successfully enabled the DLSS 5 library in more than a dozen games beyond NBA 2K27. Furthermore, a separate patch has allowed the experimental technology to run on GeForce RTX 40 series hardware, expanding its reach beyond the expected launch platform. However, it is crucial to note that these implementations remain experimental and are entirely separate from NVIDIA's embargoed demonstrations or official driver support.
NVIDIA officially announced DLSS 5 in March but has only committed to a fall 2026 release date. The existence of an active media embargo suggests that the company is already preparing press coverage ahead of that rollout, although it does not confirm when the feature will become publicly available for consumers. Since NVIDIA launched a new driver this week, it seems unlikely that the DLSS 5 release is imminent, despite the advanced state of independent testing.
While the leaked DLL file found in NBA 2K27 is approximately three times larger than the corresponding file for DLSS 4, suggesting a significant increase in complexity or data requirements, concrete details about performance gains remain under wraps. Until the embargo lifts, any claims regarding specific frame rate improvements or power efficiency must be treated as speculative until verified by official benchmarks.
