NVIDIA AI GPU truck heist turns sour as thieves find only sand
A failed heist involving two trailers branded with NVIDIA logos has highlighted the increasing interest of criminal enterprises in high-value AI hardware. Instead of finding lucrative enterprise-grade components, thieves discovered they had seized 40 tons of sand.
The incident involved trailers belonging to PlusAI, a company partnering with NVIDIA on autonomous driving technology. The thieves managed to attach their own truck cabs to two of the trailers, remaining undetected for some time. The theft was eventually discovered when an acquaintance of a PlusAI executive spotted the containers near their workplace and alerted the company.
The Fremont Police Department has since secured the two trailers, each containing 20 tonnes of sand. As of now, no arrests have been made, and the investigation is ongoing.
While the theft resulted in no loss of actual silicon, it underscores the high stakes surrounding enterprise hardware. With consumer components like the GeForce RTX 5090 seeing significant price increases, the value of professional gear is even more staggering. For instance, a single NVIDIA RTX Pro 6000 Server Edition can command a price tag of approximately $20,000, making such shipments prime targets for organized crime.
