Noctua finds more than half of tested PC cases misstate CPU cooler clearances

Significant Deviations in Case Specifications

The investigation revealed two types of inaccuracies. In some instances, the actual internal space is larger than advertised, allowing for potentially larger coolers to be installed. For example, the NZXT H2 Flow case is officially rated for a maximum CPU cooler height of 75mm, but Noctua's measurements show it can accommodate up to 79mm. Similarly, the Thermaltake TR100 offers 2.7mm more clearance than listed, while the Corsair Frame 4000D provides an additional 10mm of space.

While this might seem like a bonus for enthusiasts looking to maximize cooling performance, Noctua notes that relying on manufacturer specs without verification is risky. Conversely, the company highlighted cases where the actual clearance is significantly smaller than stated. The Asus Prime AP201 was found to be 1.7mm shorter than its specifications suggest, and the Lian Li B4-mATX case is 3.5mm shorter than advertised.

These discrepancies are particularly problematic for builds where components fit tightly within the specified limits. If a user purchases a cooler based on the official maximum height, it may touch the case panels or prevent the side panels from closing properly. This can lead to difficult returns and compatibility issues that could have been avoided with accurate data.

Recommendations for Builders

To avoid these issues, Noctua recommends purchasing the PC case before selecting other components, especially for compact builds like Mini-ITX where tolerances are tight. Alternatively, builders can use Noctua's compatibility search page, which features clearances verified by their internal team.

It is important to note that Noctua's database currently only covers air coolers. For other components such as GPUs and power supplies, users must rely on manufacturer specifications or perform their own measurements if they plan to build a custom loop or use non-standard parts.
