Skateboarding with mouse controls is my favorite in Nintendo Switch Sports Resort
At Gamescom, we got a hands-on look at Nintendo Switch Sports Resort, a title exclusive to the Switch 2. This installment expands the series' scope by blending traditional competitive sports with exploratory activities around Wuhu Island. The game is set to launch on October 22nd.
The game features a total of 12 sporting events. Six are returning from the 2022 Nintendo Switch Sports, while the other six are either new or returning after a long hiatus—some dating back to the 2009 Wii Sports Resort. The lineup includes archery, basketball, bowling, boxing, golf, power cruising, prop plane, skateboarding, table tennis, tennis, thumb wrestling, and volleyball.
Beyond standard matches, the game emphasizes "Free Play" sports, allowing players to explore Wuhu Island. This includes flying a prop plane by holding the Joy-Con like a paper airplane or power boating by using the controller like handlebars. However, the standout experience is skateboarding, which utilizes a "mouse mode." By placing the Joy-Con on a flat surface like a table and moving it back and forth, players mimic the rhythm of a skateboarder, creating a hypnotic and engaging gameplay loop.
The motion controls offer significant depth: in archery, one Joy-Con acts as the bow while the second functions as the string to control draw strength. In boxing, the Island Crown mode provides 20 ranked opponents for solo play without needing an online connection.
Nintendo Switch Sports Resort looks like a promising family hit for the Switch 2 holiday season. The key will be whether the variety across its 12 events provides enough longevity to keep players engaged.
