Muramasa: The Demon Blade Kaikitan combat to be more aggressive with revamped Ogi and Iai mechanics

Vanillaware and Marvelous are teaming up to bring Muramasa: The Demon Blade Kaikitan to modern platforms. This updated version will bundle the base game with all previous DLC and introduce significant gameplay refinements to the combat and exploration systems.

The core narrative follows Onisuke and Hyakki through a stylized depiction of Edo-period Japan. While the visual artistry remains a centerpiece, the gameplay mechanics have been redesigned to foster a more aggressive and fluid combat flow.

Key mechanical updates include:

  • Secret Arts (Ogi) System: Players can now "learn" special techniques by using swords. Learned skills can be customized, allowing up to three ground-based and three aerial techniques to be equipped. Original sword abilities remain available.
  • Resource Division: In the original, "Reiryoku" served as both an offensive and defensive resource. In this version, resources are split: one gauge is for using techniques, while another (Reiryoku limit) is consumed by defensive actions. This allows for more frequent use of powerful moves without compromising defense.
  • Revamped Iai: The instant strike mechanic during weapon swapping is now fueled by a dedicated gauge that fills through attacks or collecting souls, removing the need to wait for natural cooldowns.

Exploration has also seen improvements. Players will benefit from enhanced mobility via palanquins, fishing via boats, and new effects from visiting hot springs. Additionally, players can now strengthen crafted swords and charms using resources like Tamahagane.

A "Classic Mode" will be available, preserving the original PS Vita gameplay system but with upgraded graphics. The game is scheduled for release on February 4, 2027, for PlayStation 5, Nintendo Switch 2, and Nintendo Switch, with the PC (Steam) version arriving on February 5, 2027.
