This Plus is a Minus: Motorola Edge 70 Plus Review

Despite the "Plus" moniker, the Motorola Edge 70 Plus is actually less expensive than the standard Edge 70, but it achieves this through significant feature compromises. The question is whether it can carve out a niche in the upper mid-range or if the competition offers a better value proposition.

Battery Life as the Main Highlight

The standout feature of this device is undoubtedly the massive 6500 mAh battery. In Wi-Fi web surfing tests, the smartphone lasted 23 hours and 42 minutes, clearly outperforming the standard Edge 70. This makes it a reliable companion for users who need up to two days of moderate use without reaching for a charger.

However, this endurance comes at a cost. Instead of a versatile camera array, the device relies heavily on a 200 MP main sensor—which performs well in detail reproduction and low light—paired with a low-resolution 2 MP macro lens. The lack of a dedicated telephoto lens significantly limits zoom capabilities, leaving the camera system feeling somewhat isolated.

Display and Build: Where Compromises Lie

The display is a major strength. It is a bright AMOLED panel with a 144 Hz refresh rate and a high PWM frequency of 361 Hz, making it suitable for most users, though highly sensitive individuals should test it in person. Peak brightness in HDR content can exceed 4,000 cd/m², making it highly legible even in bright conditions.

The build quality feels premium with its acetate finish available in three colors: Mountain View, Grey Lilac, and Milky Blue. However, the chassis can produce a noticeable creaking sound when twisted, and the lack of full water submersion protection (IP64 rating only) is a notable omission for a device in this price bracket.

Performance and Software Longevity

Under the hood, the Qualcomm Snapdragon 7s Gen 3 provides sufficient performance for daily tasks, but it falls behind competitors in heavy gaming and demanding applications. In GFXBench tests, the device's performance is below the class average, particularly in high-tier settings.

On the software side, Motorola promises security updates through 2031, which is a positive sign for long-term ownership. The device ships with Android 16 pre-installed. It is worth noting, however, that security patches were not fully up-to-date at the time of testing, and Wi-Fi speeds lag behind some competitors that support the Wi-Fi 6E standard.

Ultimately, the Motorola Edge 70 Plus is a specialized device: it is a powerhouse for those prioritizing battery life and display quality, provided they can overlook its limited camera versatility and mid-range processing power.
