Modder fixes RTX 5090’s 16-pin power issue with four 8-pin connectors

Modder DallasGrave has unveiled a solution to the melting 16-pin power connector issue affecting GeForce RTX 5090 graphics cards. The new modification enables the card to be powered entirely through four conventional 8-pin PCIe cables, bypassing the controversial 12VHPWR interface.

Technical details of the mod

Unlike a previous iteration that merely shared the electrical load with the original connector, this new design features a custom PCB soldered directly to the card's power contacts. This PCB can operate independently or alongside the existing 12VHPWR connector.

According to DallasGrave, the design utilizes fused connections and equal-length PCB traces to ensure even current distribution. At a 600W load, each conductor carries between 4.1A and 4.4A, which is nearly half the current measured through a standard 16-pin connection. The modification has been tested on a shunt-modded card at up to 800W, with the PCB reaching temperatures of 45°C.

Availability and production rumors

DallasGrave is preparing versions for various graphics card designs, including NVIDIA Founders Edition models. The project also includes optional active monitoring and custom backplates. The modification is expected to be offered as a mail-in service, with same-day installations planned at a Las Vegas storefront opening in December.

However, the timing of this release is critical. Recent reports suggest that NVIDIA has stopped allocating new GB202 dies to board partners, potentially signaling the end of the GeForce RTX 5090 production cycle. While NVIDIA has not officially confirmed a discontinuation, retailers are already showing signs of a phase-out. For instance, Micro Center has updated several RTX 5090 listings with a “not carried” label, and market prices have been reported to skyrocket, reaching as high as $5,090 in some instances.
