Missing teenager rescued after contacting another player in Among Us
A teenager who went missing from Utah over 17 months ago has been rescued in Oregon following a series of communications through the game Among Us. The interaction with another player eventually led to the girl's recovery and the arrest of a suspect.
According to a federal criminal complaint reported by Newsweek and KUTV, the girl—who was 15 at the time of her disappearance from Garden City, Utah, on May 29, 2025—began chatting with another teenager in Among Us around October 15 of this year. The two players eventually moved their conversation to a different social media application, where the girl revealed her identity and disclosed that she was being held against her will in Oregon.
The investigation revealed that the teenager had been provided with a phone lacking cellular data, restricting her internet access to Wi-Fi only. After the other teenager informed their parent about the situation, the parent contacted the FBI on November 1. Federal agents were able to monitor a video call between the parent and the girl, leading to her recovery from the residence later that same day. The girl is now 17 years old.
Arrest and legal proceedings
Adam Hunter Harmel, 39, of Huntington, Oregon, was arrested during a traffic stop in connection with the case. According to the US Attorney's Office for the District of Utah, Harmel allegedly met the girl online in May 2025, subsequently drove to Utah to pick her up, and transported her across state lines to his home.
On November 2, Harmel was charged with transportation with intent to engage in criminal sexual activity. He made his first court appearance in Boise, Idaho, on November 4. US Attorney Melissa Holyoak emphasized that the priority in the case was the safe return of the minor, stating that those who prey upon vulnerable community members will be relentlessly investigated.
The US Attorney's Office for the District of Utah noted that the complaint consists of allegations, and the defendant is presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
