Minecraft Dungeons II: New Sift Dimension and Gameplay Details Revealed

At Tokyo Game Show 2026, the development team from Mojang shared new insights into Minecraft Dungeons II. The spotlight was on a brand-new dimension called Sift and several gameplay refinements designed to improve the cooperative experience.

During the session, Game Director Mans Olson and Production Director Nathan Rose explained that the sequel was conceived to explore features and community requests that couldn't be fully realized in the first game. While the world offers more freedom for exploration, the developers clarified they are not calling it an "open world" to ensure the story follows a structured, intentional sequence.

The standout feature is the new dimension, Sift. Described as a lush, organic, and soul-filled realm, it is distinct from the Nether or the End. The developers aimed to expand the concept of "what Minecraft is" by creating a world that feels like another version of the Overworld—peaceful and serene in atmosphere, yet threatened by the influence of evil villagers. Visually, the environment draws inspiration from fungi, mushrooms, and the aesthetic of Studio Ghibli's "Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind."

Key gameplay improvements include:

  • Cooperative Play: The game will support cross-play across all platforms, including mixed local and online multiplayer.
  • Equipment & Progression: Armor slots have increased to four, a new item type called "Talismans" provides passive buffs, and a new rarity tier, "Special," has been introduced.
  • Character Customization: There are no fixed classes; your role is defined by your gear. A highly requested jump mechanic has also been added.
  • Quality of Life: New features include the "Guidance Trail" for navigation, player-specific loot color-coding, and a teleportation mechanic to reunite with teammates.

Additionally, developers noted that animals are now nearly invincible to prevent the accidental deaths that players experienced in the original game. Minecraft Dungeons II is scheduled for release on September 29, 2026, for PC, Nintendo Switch 2, PS5, Xbox Series X|S, and Nintendo Switch. The title will be available on Xbox Game Pass from day one.
