Microsoft to cap shared Microsoft 365 storage at 2TB
Microsoft is planning to reduce the cloud storage capacity available for shared accounts within Microsoft 365 subscriptions. As reported by Tom's Hardware, a strict limit of 2 TB will be imposed on these types of accounts.
The move specifically targets users on shared family or group plans. While these accounts previously enjoyed higher storage capacities, the new 2TB cap is scheduled to take effect after April 2027. The company cites industry-wide resource shortages and rising cloud demand as the primary drivers behind this decision.
It is important to clarify that this restriction does not apply to individual subscriptions; personal plan users are expected to retain their current storage allotments. However, for those relying on family plans to host massive data archives, this represents a significant reduction. Currently, it remains unclear how Microsoft will handle users whose existing data usage already exceeds the upcoming 2TB threshold.
