Only 100 Grams: New Meta VR Glasses to Cost $1,299.99
Meta is shrinking the VR experience to a near-standard eyewear form factor. The new Meta VR Glasses weigh approximately 100 grams, making them five times lighter than the Meta Quest 3. This is made possible by offloading the heavy computing hardware and battery to a separate external unit.
Processing power in your pocket
To achieve this weight reduction, the CPU, battery, and storage are housed in a dedicated "Puck" that is worn in a pocket or on a belt and connected to the glasses via an optical cable. The external unit is powered by Qualcomm's new Snapdragon Reality Elite chip. The battery is expected to last up to three hours during high-resolution media playback and supports up to 45W charging.
The glasses themselves contain the sensors and displays. Meta describes the visual experience as a "5K Infinite Display" based on Micro-OLED panels, featuring 37 pixels per degree (PPD). The optics utilize compact Pancake lenses. Additionally, the device features Dolby Vision support and Dolby Atmos integrated into the temples to position it as a personal cinema.
VR without controllers
Meta is moving away from traditional controllers, relying instead on eye tracking and hand gestures. At launch, over 75 games will be available that are controlled exclusively by hands, while hundreds of other titles can be streamed via Xbox Cloud Gaming. Beyond gaming, the device targets productivity and cinema; users can place virtual screens anywhere in space and use a flat surface as a touchpad via Surface Input. The glasses also support holographic video calls through WhatsApp and Zoom, creating photorealistic digital avatars of the user.
The Meta VR Glasses are also expected to be the first VR device with IMAX Enhanced certification. The product is slated for release in Spring 2027. In the US, the announced price is $1,299.99, though a European price has not yet been confirmed.
