Meta announces new VR glasses weighing 100g for $1,300

Meta has unveiled its new Meta VR Glasses. The wearable device weighs approximately 100 grams, will retail for $1,300, and will support prominent franchises, including Capcom's Ace Attorney.

The company describes the device as a wearable that can be worn comfortably for extended periods. Eschewing traditional head straps and handheld controllers, the glasses rely on hand tracking and passthrough technology for navigation. Computing, battery life, and storage are handled by an external puck connected via an optical tether, which users can clip to a pocket or bag.

While gaming remains a core component—with new titles like Tetris Effect and Beat Saber confirmed—the announcement emphasized the device's utility as a "multi-screen private workspace." The glasses also feature IMAX Enhanced certification and access to US sports events.

This gaming-centric approach comes despite significant financial challenges within Meta's Reality Labs division. The unit has reported losses of roughly $83.6 billion over the past six years during its push into the metaverse. This period has also seen the closure of several internal studios, such as Sanzaru Games, Twisted Pixel Games, and Armature Studio.

Despite these setbacks, the VR market continues to expand. Recently, Valve shared details regarding the Steam Frame, a wireless headset with controllers similar in concept to the Meta Quest 3. The Steam Frame's base 256GB model is priced at $1,059, while the 1TB version costs $1,200, excluding additional accessories like a standalone power cable.
