Maddy Makes Games removes Celeste and TowerFall from Xbox in support of BDS boycott
Developer Maddy Makes Games has delisted Celeste and TowerFall from Xbox to support the pro-Palestinian BDS movement.
Indie developer Maddy Makes Games has removed Celeste and TowerFall from the Xbox platform. The decision was made in support of the pro-Palestinian Boycott, Divestment, and Sanctions (BDS) movement.
The removal of both titles from the Xbox store was first noticed by players and subsequently confirmed by Maddy Thorson on social media. Thorson stated that the delisting was a deliberate action to support the BDS boycott.
Maddy Makes Games is part of a growing group of developers supporting the boycott. Other creators involved include Dan Dilorio (Luck be a Landlord), Speculative Agency (Ice Water), and the developers of All Will Rise. Additionally, House House announced they will withhold the release of their co-op game Big Walk on Xbox until Microsoft and Xbox are no longer targets of the BDS movement.
The BDS movement emerged following concerns that Microsoft's Azure and AI technologies might be utilized by the Israeli Ministry of Defence (IMOD) in the Gaza conflict, according to an Associated Press investigation. While Microsoft acknowledged providing software and cloud services to the IMOD, the company stated that internal reviews have found no evidence that its technology has been used to target or harm people in the ongoing conflict.
