Lenovo has officially acknowledged that the boot failure affecting some Legion Go handhelds is not a user error, but rather a hardware defect linked to specific production batches.

For weeks, owners of the Legion Go have been reporting a frustrating issue: after installing the official BIOS update with version number N3CN42WW, their devices would refuse to boot. Instead of starting up normally, the handhelds would either enter an endless boot loop or display a black screen with only a red power LED illuminated. Initially, many users suspected they had made a mistake during the installation process, but the situation quickly escalated as reports poured in from multiple regions.

The turning point came after VideoCardz and other outlets highlighted the growing number of affected units. In response to the mounting pressure, Lenovo took a significant step by removing the problematic BIOS version N3CN42WW from its official support page without providing an immediate explanation for the failures. This silence left many owners in the dark about what had actually gone wrong.

To investigate the matter further, Lenovo employee Daniel_Legion, who posts on the company's forums, revealed that the manufacturer successfully reproduced the issue in its European L2.5 laboratory. During these tests, all three systems subjected to the BIOS update exhibited the same failure symptoms. However, other teams within Lenovo were able to install the identical BIOS version without encountering any problems.

This discrepancy is crucial because it points away from a universal software bug and suggests a hardware-specific incompatibility. The company is currently investigating whether the failures are connected to a specific motherboard component used in certain production batches or if they require a unique combination of environmental conditions to manifest. As of now, Lenovo has not yet identified the root cause of the defect.

In a significant admission, Lenovo confirmed that affected owners should absolutely not be blamed for the failure. The company stated that systems still covered by warranty should be repaired through the standard warranty process. Furthermore, Lenovo indicated that out-of-warranty devices should generally be repaired free of charge, though they advised customers to check local consumer laws for specific jurisdictional details.

It is important to note a limitation in this announcement: Lenovo's representative explicitly responded only to one Romanian user who is protected under EU law. The company has not yet announced a global repair program or a formal recall for affected users outside of that specific legal context. Consequently, while we have Lenovo on record admitting the issue stems from their side, owners in other regions are currently left to navigate the situation individually without a guaranteed global solution.

This development marks a rare moment of transparency for the manufacturer regarding a hardware defect. While the lack of a comprehensive global recall plan leaves some uncertainty for international customers, at least the burden of proof has shifted away from the users who were forced to deal with bricked devices after following official instructions.
