Intel Xe3P-based Crescent Island gains video support in Linux media driver
The latest "Intel" Media Driver version 26.3.5 has introduced support for the upcoming Crescent Island data center accelerator. This update brings video processing capabilities to the new Intel Xe3P architecture within the Linux ecosystem.
Video Pipeline for Crescent Island
The open-source driver enables three essential parts of the media pipeline for Crescent Island (abbreviated as CRI): video decoding, encoding, and processing. While Intel has not yet released a specific codec support table for this release, the driver integration confirms that the hardware video engines are being prepared for deployment.
It is also important to clarify the architecture designation. While some previous reports suggested an Xe3LP implementation, official Intel documentation identifies the architecture as Xe3P. The accelerator is expected to feature 32 Xe cores, 256 XMX engines, and support for up to 480 GB of LPDDR5X memory in a 350W air-cooled design.
AI Acceleration and Memory Scaling
Although Crescent Island is primarily engineered for AI inference, the inclusion of media engine support expands its utility in data center environments. Intel has also updated its memory specifications, expanding the potential capacity from the previously mentioned 160 GB to as much as 480 GB of LPDDR5X.
Additionally, the VPL GPU Runtime 26.3.5 update places Wildcat Lake into the Panther Lake platform family. The release also includes improvements to the HEVC encoding RAB reference structure to enhance video quality output.
