Intel Factories: First Ohio Fab Gets a Roof, Fab 62 Undergoing Equipment Installation
Intel is moving forward with its massive U.S. manufacturing expansion. Recent updates indicate that the construction of the Ohio facility has reached the roofing stage, while Fab 62 in Arizona has transitioned into the tool installation phase.
Progress in Ohio and Arizona
The construction of the Ohio factory, which faced delays due to previous budget freezes, has reached a significant milestone. The assembly of the first large roof components suggests that the building's shell could be completed in about a year. Following construction, the facility will require time for equipment setup and commissioning. Consequently, it is realistic to expect products from this site no earlier than late 2029 or early 2030, likely utilizing the Intel 14A process.
Meanwhile, Fab 62 in Arizona is further along in its development. This facility is an additional building located next to the existing Fab 52, which currently produces chips using the 18A process. According to Intel Foundry EVP Naga Chandrasekaran, construction and tool installation at Fab 62 are now fully underway, with operations expected to begin by the end of 2028.
Manufacturing Context
While these expansions are critical, Intel continues to work toward meeting high processor demand. Current capacities are heavily utilized, and new production lines will take years to become fully operational. To manage current demands, the company often employs a dual-sourcing strategy for chiplets; for instance, in the Panther Lake and upcoming Nova Lake architectures, certain components may be manufactured by TSMC before being integrated with Intel's own chiplets.
