Insta360 X6: A near-perfect 360° camera with a wild price tag

The Insta360 X6 arrives as a significant evolution of its predecessor, the X5. With custom dual Sony sensors, a revamped compact design, and advanced video capabilities like 8K/50 fps, it aims to dominate the 360-degree action camera market. However, its premium positioning raises a critical question: is the performance leap worth the steep cost?

Redesigned Form Factor and Ergonomics

The most immediate change is the physical footprint. Moving away from the tall 'candybar' aesthetic of the X3, X4, and X5, the X6 is slightly wider but more compact in height. Measuring 99 x 50.8 x 60.6 mm and weighing 196g, it feels more ergonomic and premium in the hand.

One notable shift is the replacement of physical buttons with pressure-sensitive on-screen controls. While this streamlines the chassis, it can be frustrating for users accustomed to tactile feedback, especially when operating the device with gloves. On the bright side, the lenses are now five times more scratch-resistant, and the waterproofing has been bumped up to 20 meters without a housing—surpassing the 15-meter limit of the X5 and outperforming rivals like the GoPro Max 2.

A long-awaited addition is the 47 GB of onboard storage. While it falls short of the 105 GB found in the Osmo 360, it provides a vital safety net for those who occasionally forget their microSD cards.

Performance and Imaging Capabilities

Under the hood, the X6 is powered by a new 4nm triple AI chip, featuring an 8-core flagship processor and two dedicated imaging processors. The star of the show is the pair of custom 1/1.1-inch square Sony sensors. These provide 33% more surface area than the X5's sensors, significantly improving light intake.

In daylight, the footage is exceptionally sharp and vibrant, aided by the AdaptiveTone 2.0 system. However, the real magic happens in low light. The Purevideo mode handles shadows and highlights with impressive clarity, minimizing noise even in challenging street lighting. For professionals, the inclusion of 10-bit I-Log color and Dolby Vision support provides the dynamic range and flexibility needed for high-end color grading in DaVinci Resolve.

The FlowState stabilization remains industry-leading, particularly when paired with the Jitter Blue Reduction mode for low-light motion. One minor recurring issue is the occasional stitching line artifacts when objects are too close to the lens overlap, a problem that persists from previous generations.

Battery Life and Software Intelligence

Battery performance has seen a massive boost. The new 2,600 mAh battery (which is not interchangeable with X5 units) allows for approximately 140 minutes of continuous 8K/30 fps recording—a 50% improvement over the previous model. The device also supports 30W USB-C PD fast charging, reaching 80% capacity in just 26 minutes.

On the software side, the AI Director feature automates the editing process by creating shareable clips with music and transitions while the camera charges. While this is a major time-saver, the companion app still presents a steep learning curve for those attempting manual, high-level edits.

The Price Premium

The Insta360 X6 is positioned at the top of the market. The standard bundle starts at $699, while the Essential bundle reaches $799. This makes it more expensive than its primary competitors, the DJI Osmo 360 II ($549.99) and the GoPro Max 2 ($499.99). While the upgrade is substantial for users coming from an X3 or X4, owners of the X5 might find it difficult to justify the $150 price jump unless they specifically require the improved low-light performance and 8K/50 fps capabilities.
