Insomniac's take on Wolverine is ferocious, destructive and cinematic - but a little predictable

Insomniac Games is preparing a new comic book adaptation — Marvel's Wolverine. The game will launch on PlayStation 5 on September 15, 2026. According to the developers, Logan will be "ferocious, destructive and cinematic", but some gameplay elements and story beats may feel predictable to players.

Open World or Linear Story?

Unlike previous titles from the studio, Marvel's Wolverine does not promise an open world. Instead, developers chose a linear level structure to emphasize the character: Logan is a "force of nature" who doesn't like staying in one place for too long. This decision also avoids the need to complete checklists of side quests.

Combat System and Rage Mechanic

Combat revolves around claw attacks, health regeneration, and heightened senses. Players can use the "Last Stand" ability by rapidly pressing buttons after taking damage. There's also a "Rage" meter that fills up when enemies are destroyed. At rage tier three, the screen turns red, and Logan enters an uncontrolled fury mode, allowing instant finishing moves.

Criticism and Expectations

The early demo shows high polish and cinematic quality, but some combat moments may feel familiar. For example, bosses with large weak points and the need to dodge their attacks before striking them resemble classic genre patterns. Also, plot twists and dialogues may seem too straightforward to some players.
