Review: Huawei Watch D3 — Smartwatch with blood pressure monitoring is now even better

The new Huawei Watch D3 is not a revolution, but a polished evolution of a specialized smartwatch line. The core strength of the D series—wrist-based blood pressure monitoring—remains intact but has become more accurate and comfortable. In this review, we examine whether Huawei has successfully made the device more versatile and whether the upgrade justifies the price over its more affordable predecessor.

Thinner Case and Vibrant Display

The most notable physical improvement in the Huawei Watch D3 is its ergonomics. The case is noticeably slimmer at 11.4 mm, enhancing comfort for all-day wear. The display has also received a significant upgrade: the 1.92-inch AMOLED screen now reaches a peak brightness of 3,000 cd/m², doubling the brightness of the previous generation. This ensures excellent legibility even under direct sunlight.

However, medical precision comes with specific limitations. Despite the IP68 rating, the watch is not intended for swimming or showering. The included documentation explicitly warns that the device must be wiped and dried before taking a blood pressure reading. This requirement is due to the integrated inflatable cuff located within the strap.

Health: ECG and Blood Pressure Monitoring

In terms of health tracking, the Huawei Watch D3 remains a highly capable tool. Testing shows that the blood pressure monitoring is remarkably accurate, with deviations of approximately 3.7% for systolic and 2.86% for diastolic pressure compared to a standard cuff monitor. This positions the device as a serious contender in the medical wearable niche.

The ECG (electrocardiogram) functionality allows for single-channel recording, with results exportable as a PDF for medical professionals. While reliable, the feature lacks significant innovation; it remains a standard single-lead implementation without the ability for continuous overnight monitoring or additional electrode inputs.

Other sensors, including heart rate and blood oxygen (SpO₂) levels, perform exceptionally well, showing minimal deviation from medical-grade reference devices like the Polar H10 chest strap.

Software and Battery Life

The device runs on HarmonyOS. A key consideration for Android users is that the Huawei Health app is unavailable in the Google Play Store, requiring manual installation via APK or AppGallery. While the feature set is comprehensive for Huawei smartphone users, others may face limitations, such as the unavailability of Petal Maps navigation.

Battery performance is impressive: even with intensive use—including GPS workouts and frequent blood pressure checks—the watch lasts about four days, with the manufacturer claiming up to six days under normal conditions. Fast charging is highly efficient, reaching a 50% charge in just 16 minutes.
