GTA6 Features a Dedicated Writing Team Just for NPC Dialogue
The development of Grand Theft Auto VI (GTA6) is matching its massive scale with an equally extraordinary production process. According to an interview with LOVE Magazine, Rockstar Games is operating a separate writing team dedicated solely to pedestrian dialogue within the game's open world.
The interview featured key figures including Rockstar North co-studio head Rob Nelson, Senior Vice President of Narrative Rupert Humphries, and Writing Director for the open world James Horton. Humphries revealed that the team focused exclusively on pedestrian dialogue is based at the Los Angeles studio. Additionally, writers handling advertising and comedy content are spread across New York, Los Angeles, and London.
The team creates ambient content that players encounter naturally during gameplay, such as overheard street conversations, phone calls, radio advertisements, and political programs. James Horton explained that the goal is to ensure dialogue sounds natural even if a player only catches snippets while sprinting past, while remaining a complete, coherent conversation if the player stops to listen.
While NPC dialogue is not a new concept for the franchise—GTA 4 featured over 80,000 lines of dialogue—GTA6 elevates this to a dedicated area of production. Rockstar is deploying specialized writing and production staff specifically to expand brief street interactions into a massive, independent component of the game's atmosphere.
This approach is also vital for conveying the essence of the state of Leonida. To capture the local culture and societal landscape, Rockstar dispatched research teams to the real-life state of Florida. Developers personally visited Miami and the Florida Keys to conduct photography, research, and meet with locals to capture the region's distinct atmosphere and stories.
GTA6 is scheduled for release on November 19. Set in modern-day Vice City and the state of Leonida, the game follows the story of Jason and Lucia.
