Gigabyte Unveils WRX90 AI TOP: A Threadripper Pro Board with 2TB RAM Support
Gigabyte has announced the WRX90 AI TOP, a workstation motherboard built for AMD Ryzen Threadripper Pro processors. The board is specifically engineered for professionals looking to build robust local AI infrastructures to run large models without relying on external cloud APIs.
The standout feature of the WRX90 AI TOP is its massive memory capacity. Utilizing an eight-channel DDR5 configuration across eight UDIMM slots, the board supports up to 2TB of ECC RDIMM or 3D stacked RDIMM-3DS memory. When paired with compatible CPUs, the system can reach speeds of up to 7,800MT/s via EXPO profiles. This high bandwidth is essential for memory-intensive applications like complex physics simulations and large-scale AI model deployment.
Expansion and Connectivity
To accommodate multi-GPU setups, Gigabyte has integrated seven Ultra Durable PCIe 5.0 x16 slots. Additionally, the inclusion of two MCIO 8i connectors provides high-density routing for four PCIe 5.0 lanes each, allowing for up to nine GPUs or expansion cards in total. For storage, the board offers two Gen 5 M.2 slots, one Gen 4 M.2 slot, and four SATA 6Gb/s ports.

Power delivery and thermal management are prioritized for sustained professional workloads. The board features a 32+3+3+3-phase digital power design fed by two 8-pin cables, built upon a 14-layer server-grade PCB with a full-metal backplate. To manage heat, Gigabyte has added small fans for the VRM and chipset, alongside a dedicated dual-fan cooling solution for the RAM. According to the manufacturer, this specialized RAM cooling can reduce average memory temperatures by up to 43°C compared to unassisted setups.
Management and I/O
For remote administration, the WRX90 AI TOP includes an onboard ASPEED AST2600 BMC and a dedicated IPMI LAN port, enabling remote monitoring and power control. The I/O selection is extensive, featuring two USB 4 Type-C ports, two 10GbE LAN ports, two Mini-DisplayPort outputs, a microSD card slot, and several USB 3.2 Gen 2 Type-A and Type-C ports.

While Gigabyte has not yet announced the pricing or availability for the WRX90 AI TOP, its cost is expected to be significant. For context, the lower-tier TRX50 AI TOP is already positioned at $899, suggesting this high-end workstation solution will carry a premium price tag.
