Gamepad Support in World of Warcraft: Forever
Blizzard has announced gamepad support for World of Warcraft: Forever. Currently in a functional beta stage, the feature aims toward a long-term goal of providing a seamless, keyboard-free experience for players who prefer controllers.
Gamepad support in WoW: Forever is more than just a compatibility update; it involves a significant overhaul of the user interface. Blizzard has refined targeting, spell casting, looting, and menu navigation to suit the ergonomics of a controller. The HUD has been redesigned to mirror the gamepad layout, ensuring that on-screen icons correspond directly to the buttons in the player's hands.
The control scheme emphasizes customization and efficiency. Players can manage three distinct action bar sets, providing a total of 84 customizable slots for spells and abilities. This allows for specialized layouts for combat, utility, or movement. Additionally, dedicated shortcuts allow players to access essential elements like the backpack, quest tracker, chat, or buff management without navigating through deep menus.

For players with supported RGB-capable controllers, a faction-based lighting feature is included: the controller glows red for Horde and blue for Alliance. While the implementation is a major step forward, Blizzard notes that the interface is still evolving. Some screens currently lack full footers for interaction prompts, and a keyboard is still required for typing in the in-game chat.
