DuckStation Update Makes PlayStation Emulation Smoother Than Ever

DuckStation, one of the most popular emulators for the original PlayStation, has received a major update aimed at boosting performance and enhancing the user experience. The core improvement is the introduction of multi-threaded shader compilation, which is expected to virtually eliminate shader compilation stuttering on modern Windows, macOS, and Linux systems.

Technical Enhancements and Performance

In addition to multi-threaded shader compilation, the update introduces multi-threaded graphics pipeline compilation, a reworked shader caching mechanism, and CPU-bound dynamic task thread counts. These optimizations are designed to solidify DuckStation's position as one of the most performant emulators that maintains a high degree of hardware accuracy.

When compared to other leading solutions, DuckStation offers significantly higher hardware accuracy than ePSXe and outperforms Mednafen/Beetle PSX in terms of raw performance. It effectively serves as a middle ground between the two; while Mednafen remains a viable option for those using RetroArch frontends, DuckStation provides a more streamlined experience for most users. For those requiring the absolute highest level of system accuracy, original hardware remains the only definitive solution.

Modern Features and Visual Enhancements

Beyond its accuracy—which is vital for speedrunners needing to replicate exact game behaviors—DuckStation supports a wide array of modern features. This includes a Big Picture UI, widescreen rendering, automatic controller binding, and texture warping correction to fix the visual artifacts common in PlayStation titles.

A standout feature is the ability to toggle the removal of classic visual defects. Unlike Mednafen/Beetle PSX, which often requires navigating the RetroArch interface, DuckStation allows users to manage these settings directly. Furthermore, the emulator supports custom shader injection, similar to ReShade. This allows enthusiasts to apply effects like CRT display emulation to enhance the presentation of iconic titles like Castlevania: Symphony of the Night. Thanks to the new multi-threading capabilities, these enhanced visuals can run smoothly even on modest multi-core CPUs.
