Discord to make messages in discoverable servers searchable on Google

Discord is changing how information is accessed within its platform. Messages and discussions in servers marked as "discoverable"—meaning anyone can find them via search engines without an invite link—will now be indexed by services like Google. The goal is to bring valuable community knowledge out of private chats and back into the open web.

According to Discord, the shift from traditional message boards to private servers has effectively locked away useful information, such as guides and theory-crafting, from the wider internet. To address this, the platform is introducing server web pages for all discoverable servers, allowing search engines to index discussions for easier public access.

The rollout will follow this timeline:

  • Starting November 16, every discoverable server will have a dedicated web page.
  • From mid-December, messages within specific channels will become viewable on these pages.

To protect user privacy, Discord has implemented several safeguards. Server admins will decide which channels are included in the web view, and members can opt out of having their messages displayed. Additionally, usernames and avatars will not be shown alongside the messages.

Specific regional and age-based restrictions apply:

  • In the EU, UK, Canada, Brazil, Australia, and South Korea, the option to show channel messages is disabled by default due to local legal restrictions.
  • Users categorized as teenagers are completely excluded from this feature and cannot enable it until they reach adulthood.

While the move aims to make information more accessible, it raises significant questions regarding AI training. Although Discord's current policy prohibits AI companies from training models on user messages, the transition to public web availability may create new challenges for data privacy and scraping.
