Complete Dell workstation with 96GB NVIDIA GPU may cost less than graphics card alone

The soaring prices of professional-grade GPUs are creating a strange market anomaly: sometimes, it is cheaper to buy a whole computer than just the graphics card. As reported by user def1ant, a complete Dell workstation equipped with an NVIDIA RTX PRO 6000 Blackwell (96GB) can cost less than the standalone card sold by major retailers.

Cost-effective configuration

The price gap is driven by how high-end AI-focused hardware is positioned. While Micro Center lists the NVIDIA RTX PRO 6000 Blackwell Workstation Edition at $16,499.99 (discounted from $17,999.99), a Dell Pro Max Tower T2 system can be acquired for significantly less. After applying a 10% discount, the total system price dropped to $12,331.80—roughly $3,000 to $4,000 less than the price of the GPU alone.

To achieve this price point, the workstation was configured with minimal essential components:

  • Intel Core Ultra 5 235 processor (14 cores, 14 threads);
  • 8GB of DDR5-5600 system memory;
  • Ubuntu Linux 24.04 LTS operating system.

This setup is clearly not intended for heavy workstation tasks; rather, it serves as a way to acquire the high-end GPU with the lowest possible overhead for the rest of the hardware.

How the discounts work

Buyers have noted that Dell offers several ways to reduce the total cost, such as promotional coupons via email registration or negotiated discounts through direct sales representatives. Even without these specific coupons, the price of the complete Dell system remains lower than the standalone Micro Center offer for the same graphics card.
