Dark Souls II and III servers offline again
FromSoftware has temporarily disabled online features for Dark Souls II and III on all platforms due to a technical error. Restoration timing remains unknown.
Online services for Dark Souls II and Dark Souls III have been offline since October 30. FromSoftware confirmed the shutdown due to an unspecified technical error, stating that servers will remain unavailable on all platforms until further notice.
The outage affects cooperative play, PvP, and invasions, preventing players from summoning help or entering others' worlds. Indirect online features are also disabled, including player messages, bloodstains, and phantom silhouettes. Single-player campaigns remain fully functional and unaffected by the issue.
Affected Platforms and Scope
According to FromSoftware Player Support, the issue impacts all currently supported platforms, including Windows, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One. While the developer has acknowledged a server-side problem, the specific technical cause has not been disclosed. Notably, online services for PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 were already permanently discontinued in March 2024.
Historical Context
This follows a similar large-scale outage in early 2022, when the servers for Dark Souls Remastered, Dark Souls II, and Dark Souls III were taken offline for several months. That incident was triggered by a critical security vulnerability involving Remote Code Execution (RCE). While no such security threat has been confirmed for the current shutdown, the timeline for restoration remains uncertain.
During the 2022 outage, the recovery process was lengthy: Dark Souls III servers returned online after seven months, while the original PC version of Dark Souls II was unavailable for over ten months.
