Corsair HS80 V2 MAX & VOXARA: Hardware Upgrades vs. Software Woes

Corsair has released two new audio products: the HS80 V2 MAX wireless headset (£169) and the "Voxara" USB condenser microphone (£159). While the headset aims to resolve the battery issues of its predecessor and features upgraded 50mm drivers, the Voxara seeks to bring premium Elgato Wave integration to a standalone USB mic. However, both devices come with a premium price tag that raises questions about whether the hardware justifies the potential software frustrations.

HS80 V2 MAX: Impressive Battery, Inconsistent Audio

The Corsair HS80 V2 MAX shows significant hardware improvements over the original model. The most notable upgrade is the battery life, which reaches up to 110 hours via 2.4GHz (with RGB off) and approximately 70 hours with RGB enabled—enough to last a week of heavy use. Connectivity is also a highlight, offering seamless simultaneous 2.4GHz and Bluetooth support, allowing users to manage phone calls while gaming. Testing shows a stable wireless range of up to 15 meters, even with walls in between.

On the downside, the audio experience is marred by inconsistent software integration. Over Bluetooth, the sound can feel compressed and sibilant. When connected to a PC, the iCUE software causes significant volume spikes; at just 20% Windows volume, the output can become harsh and screeching. Interestingly, closing iCUE results in a much more balanced sound signature, though it remains somewhat V-shaped. Additional frustrations include a floppy, non-removable microphone arm and software bugs that can break the flip-to-mute function when iCUE is active. Furthermore, users cannot use Dolby Atmos in conjunction with custom EQ settings.

Voxara: High-Quality Audio with Smart Controls

The Voxara microphone stands out as a highly capable piece of hardware. Its audio quality is a significant step up from standard gaming headsets. It features intuitive on-device controls, including a multi-functional dial for gain and headphone volume, a responsive tap-to-mute ring, and RGB indicators. It also includes a 3.5mm jack for zero-latency monitoring.

The microphone is designed to work perfectly as a standalone device, but it also offers deep integration with the Elgato Wave Link app for advanced routing, compression, and AI noise reduction. While the included aluminum desk stand is prone to picking up desk vibrations, the microphone itself delivers exceptional performance. For those looking for the best results, mounting the unit on a boom arm is recommended.
