Cloudflare saves 100 TB of RAM by slashing server hashes by 90%
Cloudflare has successfully reclaimed 100 TB of RAM across its infrastructure by implementing a major optimization in how server hashes are stored. This change effectively eliminated massive cache bloat by reducing the number of entries significantly.
The core of the optimization lies in the reduction of hash entries. Previously, the system maintained 100,000 entries, but through a redesigned approach, Cloudflare managed to compress this down to just 10,000. This 90% reduction in the number of entries directly translated into a massive saving of 100 TB of memory.
Rather than relying on simply adding more hardware to handle growing data volumes, the company focused on software-level efficiency. By streamlining the way server hashes are managed, they addressed the issue of cache bloat, ensuring that memory usage scales more effectively with the size of the network.
