Chosfox Announces Compact Wireless Mechanical Keyboard Init40 with Unconventional 40% Layout

Chosfox, known for its niche mechanical keyboards in the Geonix series, has officially announced the Init40. This new product addresses the question of how to maintain usability without sacrificing keyboard size. Unlike the brand's previous models featuring an orthogonal layout, the Init40 adopts a more familiar row-staggered arrangement, making it significantly easier for first-time users of ultra-compact keyboards to adapt.
According to the announcement, the Init40 was designed to answer the question: "How small can we make a keyboard without giving up the advantages of an easy-to-use device?" While the compact size may not suit every user, the product is clearly aimed at niche keyboard enthusiasts who enjoy customizing layouts and adapting to smaller keyboards.
Design and Components
The Init40 features a CNC-machined aluminum case with an anodized finish. The design combines straight edges with slightly rounded corners and vertical ventilation slots on the left side, adding a retro feel. Similar to the Wooting 60HE series, it includes a built-in loop for attaching a strap.
The keycap profile appears to match the LAK (Low Angle Keycaps) used on previous Geonix boards. Internally, the keyboard is equipped with Kailh Choc V2 switches, which are currently considered among the best low-profile mechanical switches available in the market.
To facilitate layout configuration, the Init40 will likely use a combination of QMK firmware and VIAL software, consistent with Chosfox's existing product lineup. Additionally, a split spacebar layout is implemented to make using such a small keyboard more convenient.
Price and Availability
The official price and release date for the Init40 have not yet been announced. However, Chosfox sells keyboards with nearly identical specifications in the Geonix series for approximately $120. Based on this pricing strategy, it is expected that the Init40 will launch in a similar price range. The device is anticipated to support both Bluetooth and 2.4GHz wireless connections.
