Call of Duty introduces parrying: a new layer to melee combat
In the Modern Warfare 4 campaign, Infinity Ward has introduced a surprising addition to the franchise: a dedicated parrying mechanic. This shift turns standard melee encounters into high-stakes sequences where timing is everything.
The campaign features lengthy segments where players must rely solely on hand-to-hand combat. Unlike previous Call of Duty titles, these encounters require mastering the parry timing; failing to block a strike correctly results in an immediate Game Over. This mechanic is essential for breaking an opponent's posture to perform a takedown.
The system is introduced during the mission Out in the Cold, which draws inspiration from the style of John Wick. While early enemies have wide attack windows that are easy to read, the complexity increases significantly as the game progresses. Later encounters involve enemies using knives—which are harder to parry—as well as kicks and headbutts. Some opponents even gain the ability to dodge, a luxury the player does not have.
Notably, the game eschews traditional stamina or stagger gauges, forcing players to focus entirely on reading enemy animations. The combat feels weighty and impactful, featuring bespoke animations for knife-on-knife clashes that evoke the precision of Onimusha's steel-on-steel combat.
This addition represents a trend in recent Call of Duty campaigns to incorporate diverse mechanics—such as looting and crafting—to add depth to the single-player experience.
The mechanic is central to several pivotal fights in the latter half of the campaign. Players must navigate complex animations to time their blocks perfectly. The animation system is dense, providing a sense of heft to every hit and ensuring that melee combat feels like a deliberate part of the tactical experience rather than a mere distraction.
