Bungie plans to unvault Destiny 2 campaigns by 2028
Following recent announcements regarding the cessation of major updates for Destiny 2, Bungie has outlined a roadmap for the future of the series. The developer is working on a plan to bring back previously vaulted content, though players should not expect to access these campaigns until at least 2028.
Head of product Josh Deane explained that the first phase of this initiative focuses on restoring the game's campaign slate. This includes activities, Strikes, and Raids from vaulted expansions. Specifically, the plan involves the return of the Red War, Forsaken, Curse of Osiris, and Warmind campaigns, as well as the Menagerie activity with reprised rewards.
The project is currently in the pre-production stage. Full-scale production is expected to commence no later than February 2027 and is anticipated to take approximately 12 months. Consequently, these expansions are unlikely to be fully playable within the game until 2028.
In addition to the primary rollout, the developers are investigating several "stretch goals" that may be addressed during or after the unvaulting process, including:
- Free roam destinations;
- Seasonal activities spanning from Sundial (Season 9) to The Coil (Season 32);
- Weapon updates for Raids and Raid Lairs;
- New PvP maps.
Looking further ahead, Bungie teased a project referred to as Destiny 'Legacy' and mentioned upcoming "new updates" as part of a future celebration. While there is speculation regarding the original Destiny, no official confirmation has been provided. The studio is expected to release more information regarding these plans in early 2025, with the next major communications update scheduled for February.
