Bose Recalls 670,000+ S1 Pro Batteries Due to Fire Risk

A portable speaker is meant to power a party, not ignite one. Bose has issued a massive voluntary recall affecting more than 670,000 lithium-ion battery packs used in its S1 Pro and S1 Pro+ Bluetooth speaker systems across the United States and Canada. The move follows documented incidents where batteries melted, smoked, or caught fire, posing a significant safety risk to users.

The decision to recall the units comes after reports filed with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC). According to the commission, Bose has received seven reports of battery packs melting, smoking, or catching fire. Six of these incidents resulted in property damage, though fortunately, no injuries have been reported to date. This safety concern highlights the inherent risks associated with lithium-ion technology when manufacturing defects or degradation lead to thermal runaway.

Scope of the Recall

The recall is extensive, covering approximately 634,759 battery packs sold in the U.S. and an additional 35,400 in Canada, totaling roughly 670,159 units. This includes both the integrated batteries in the speaker systems and replacement battery packs sold separately. The affected units were available from December 2017 through July 2026 and were sold through major retailers including Amazon, Best Buy, Walmart, and directly from Bose, as well as various other online platforms.

It is important to note that the recall specifically targets the lithium-ion battery packs, not the speaker units themselves. Owners of the S1 Pro and S1 Pro+ systems can continue to use their speakers as long as they remain connected to AC power, effectively bypassing the battery entirely.

How to Identify Affected Batteries

The recall is limited to specific serial numbers. Users should inspect their battery packs immediately. If the first six digits of the serial number match any of the following sequences, the battery is part of the recall and should be stopped being used immediately:

To check the serial number, power off and unplug the S1 system. Remove the bottom plate by loosening the screws, then use the pull tabs to remove the battery pack. This procedure is identical for both the S1 Pro and S1 Pro+ models.

Disposal and Replacement

Bose and the CPSC have issued a strong warning against disposing of these batteries in regular trash or standard retail recycling bins. Because of the heightened fire risk, these lithium-ion packs must be handled as hazardous waste. Users are advised to contact their local municipal household hazardous waste (HHW) collection center to confirm if they accept recalled lithium-ion batteries before attempting disposal.

For those with confirmed affected units, Bose has established a support page where users can follow instructions to request a free replacement battery pack that meets safety standards.
