Apple launches new MacBook Pro with touchscreen and OLED

Apple has officially unveiled its new MacBook Pro lineup, introducing two major shifts for the series: the transition to OLED displays and the addition of touchscreen support. Unveiled at an event in Los Angeles, these models represent the first significant redesign of the MacBook Pro since 2021, when the M1 Pro and M1 Max models introduced the current design language.

OLED XDR Displays and Touch Control

The new 14-inch and 16-inch models feature OLED XDR panels equipped with ProMotion technology, allowing for adaptive refresh rates between 10 Hz and 120 Hz. Apple claims these displays reach a peak brightness of 2,000 nits and a 10,000,000:1 contrast ratio for true blacks. A key highlight is the introduction of touch control, allowing users to interact with the screen via fingers. To support this, Apple has redesigned the hinge to be more stable, reducing screen wobble during touch interactions.

Visually, the laptops adopt the Dynamic Island around the webcam—a feature familiar from the iPhone—to handle real-time notifications. Additionally, the laptops feature illuminated Apple logos on the lids, a design element not seen on the Pro line since 2016.

Hardware and Dimensions

Under the hood, the systems are powered by the existing M5 Pro and M5 Max chips. Maximum configurations can be equipped with up to 128GB of memory and 16TB of storage. Thanks to the thinner stack of the OLED display technology, the devices are slightly slimmer: the 16-inch model is nearly 1 mm thinner, while the 14-inch model is half a millimeter thinner than its predecessors.

Despite the added features, the laptops are lighter. The 14-inch MacBook Pro now weighs 3 lbs, roughly 0.5 lbs less than the previous version. The 16-inch model weighs 4 lbs, making it 0.7 lbs lighter than before. Apple also promises an upgraded audio experience, claiming 50% deeper bass and new tweeters for improved clarity.

Pricing and Availability

Pre-orders are available now, with shipping scheduled to begin on November 6. The pricing structure is as follows:

  • 14-inch MacBook Pro — starting at $2,899;
  • 16-inch MacBook Pro — starting at $3,399.

Regarding software, Apple states that its native apps are ready for touch out of the box. Many third-party applications, including Notion, Canva, Zoom, Microsoft Word, Adobe Lightroom, and DaVinci Resolve, are also expected to support touch functionality immediately.
