Apex Legends adds Godzilla to its history of crossovers

Apex Legends is set to host another intellectual property crossover, this time featuring Godzilla. Starting November 10th, the event will introduce themed content inspired by various films in the franchise, ranging from the 1954 original to modern entries like Godzilla Minus One and Godzilla (2014).

The event will bring more than just cosmetic items to the battle royale. On the Storm Point map, Godzilla will make a more active appearance than a mere cameo; the monster will occasionally blast specific areas with atomic breath, creating lethal danger zones. Players who manage to navigate these zones may be able to secure a custom Devotion LMG, which features its own unique heat ray attack.

The collection of character skins is inspired by different eras of the Godzilla filmography. Bloodhound will receive a skin based on Godzilla Minus One, while Horizon's new look is inspired by the character from Godzilla vs. Destoroyah. Octane is also slated to receive a skin related to Jet Jaguar. Many of the weapon and character skins are expected to feature design elements reminiscent of the monster's dorsal fins.

While these crossovers involve significant production effort, they remain a point of contention regarding the game's identity. Concerns have been raised about how such highly recognizable skins can interfere with the ability to read character silhouettes during combat. Furthermore, there is the argument that these temporary brand integrations can shift the focus away from the competitive nature of the battle royale, turning the arena into a temporary billboard for external franchises.
