Hands-on: Aniimo — A Living, Breathing, and Adorable Open World

The developers at Pawprint Studio are gearing up for the release of their open-world monster-catching RPG, Aniimo, scheduled for September 16. We had the chance to play a recent hands-on build to see how the developers have addressed feedback from previous testing and whether the core gameplay loop feels more cohesive.

The primary focus of this build wasn't a total overhaul, but rather a refinement of the connection between exploration and collection. The developers have worked to reduce friction, simplifying the equipment system to allow players to focus more on the joy of raising and discovering creatures rather than managing complex stats.

A World Worth Exploring

The game features over 200 species of Aniimo. These aren't just static models; each creature has distinct animations and highly detailed textures. The fur rendering is particularly impressive—thanks to NVIDIA DLSS 4.5 technology, the movement of furry creatures looks incredibly soft and natural, making the world feel tactile and alive.

The setting is the continent of Aidel, divided between the sky city of Astra and vast natural landscapes. The ecosystem is dynamic: the types of creatures you encounter are directly tied to the terrain, weather, and seasons. Whether you are in a misty forest or on a sunny beach, the environment dictates the life around you, making exploration feel purposeful.

The Twine System: Exploration Redefined

The standout mechanic is the Twine system, which allows players to essentially merge with their captured creatures. Instead of just using monsters for combat, you use their unique abilities to navigate the world. Need to climb a cliff? Twine with a climbing creature. Need to cross a lake? Switch to a swimming one. This turns collection into a vital tool for traversal.

To prevent the gameplay from being interrupted by constant menu navigation, the developers implemented an auto-switch feature. If you jump into water or approach a wall, the game automatically activates the appropriate Aniimo from your party. This makes movement through the open world feel seamless and fluid.

Streamlined Progression

One of the most significant changes is the overhaul of the gear system. Previous testers found the rune and equipment grinding to be excessive. In this build, the system has been simplified: each creature now has a single equipment slot with fixed stats, removing the need for endless farming to achieve perfect builds. This shift allows the game to focus on its true strength: the collection and growth of the creatures themselves.

The capturing process using Aniipod has also become more engaging. Success isn't just about raw stats; it depends on your positioning, whether the creature is sleeping or eating, and whether you've been spotted. This adds a layer of tactical decision-making to every encounter.

Final Thoughts

While there are minor issues with voice-over synchronization and text alignment in this build, Aniimo shows a clear direction. By prioritizing ease of use and environmental interaction over complex menu management, Pawprint Studio has created a loop that feels rewarding rather than tedious. It is a polished, charming experience that makes you truly want to see what lies beyond the next horizon.
