AMD releases chipset driver version 8.08.12.551 for improved gaming performance

AMD has released chipset driver version 8.08.12.551, marking a rare exception where motherboard chipset firmware directly impacts gaming performance rather than just CPU or GPU drivers.

While chipset drivers are typically considered secondary to graphics drivers, this update shows tangible benefits in specific titles. Independent testing focused on Fortnite, revealing significant improvements in frame time consistency despite a negligible drop in average frames per second (FPS).

The benchmark compared the new driver against version 8.07.12.549. Average FPS dropped slightly from 523.7 to 518.3, a change within the margin of error (<1%). However, the update drastically improved stability metrics: 1% low FPS rose by nearly 10% (from 600.9 to 645 FPS), and 0.2% low FPS surged by approximately 70% (from 211.4 to 353.3 FPS). This shift indicates a much smoother experience with fewer stuttering moments.

The performance gains are specific to Fortnite, likely due to the game's high baseline frame rates (500–600 FPS) making raw FPS increases less perceptible to average users. Nevertheless, the update enhances stability and compatibility across other aspects of system operation. Users with AMD chipsets can upgrade via the official support page to experience these smoother gameplay frames.
