AMD driver lists ATLite3 and Gainsborough, linked to PS6 Orion and Steam Deck 2
The latest AMD Radeon driver package, version 26.9.2, released on September 29, contains references to hardware that has yet to be officially announced. As reported by users on the AnandTech forums, the driver lists three specific codenames: ATLite3, AT2, and Gainsborough.
ATLite3 and the Orion Project
The ATLite3 entry has sparked significant discussion among hardware enthusiasts. Leakers, including Kepler_L2, suggest this is likely the GPU codename for Orion, the rumored next-generation SoC for the PlayStation 6.
This naming convention aligns with AMD's previous development cycles. For instance, the PlayStation 5 GPU was identified in PCI ID databases as Navi10Lite during its development phase. Furthermore, earlier leaks suggested that AMD's upcoming console-oriented graphics projects might follow a specific naming scheme, reinforcing the link between ATLite3 and Sony's future hardware.
Gainsborough: A Potential Steam Deck 2 Chip?
The Gainsborough entry is perhaps even more intriguing. Technical data suggests that while the current Steam Deck platform (Van Gogh/Aerith) utilizes the FF3 package, Gainsborough is associated with the FF6 BGA package featuring 1,179 contacts.
Import and export records reportedly show that hardware carrying the Gainsborough codename was shipped several times in late July, suggesting that physical silicon or validation boards may already be in circulation. The name also fits Valve's established pattern: the original Steam Deck SoC used the codename Aerith Gainsborough, and the OLED revision was linked to the name Sephiroth, suggesting a thematic progression for the next-generation handheld.
