AMD claims improved FSR frame gen for smoother motion

AMD has announced new optimizations for its FSR frame generation technology, claiming that improvements to frame-pacing consistency will result in smoother motion within supported games.

Addressing frame pacing issues

Frame pacing refers to the consistency of the delay between each rendered or generated frame. In an ideal scenario, these intervals are identical, delivering a smooth visual experience. However, FSR frame generation has faced criticism due to inconsistent frame delivery. Independent observations, such as those from Hardware Unboxed, noted that while frames were generated at an even pace, their delivery to the display was jittery, causing stutters that undermined the technology's purpose.

This issue was notably absent in Nvidia's DLSS frame generation, making the fix a critical step for AMD to remain competitive in motion smoothness.

Hardware requirements and architecture

The rollout of these improvements is specifically targeted at the Radeon RX 9000 series. The company has not yet confirmed whether older graphics generations will receive similar updates.

It is important to note the fundamental architectural differences between the generations:

  • The Radeon RX 9000 series will utilize an AI-driven pipeline for frame generation.
  • The Radeon RX 7000 series relies on an analytical version based on FSR 3.

While the specific technical changes remain undisclosed, AMD aims to deliver a more responsive and consistent gaming experience by resolving these timing inconsistencies.
