AI upscaling is coming to PS5
Sony Interactive Entertainment has announced Quick Spectral Super Resolution (QSSR), a new AI upscaling tier for the PS5. Developed through Project Amethyst in collaboration with AMD, QSSR aims to bring enhanced image quality to the standard console, a feature previously exclusive to PS5 Pro via PSSR due to high computational demands.
QSSR is a streamlined evolution of the PSSR technology. By utilizing a simplified neural network architecture and hand-tuned implementation, the technology maximizes performance on the PS5 hardware. This allows for notable improvements in both image detail and temporal stability compared to conventional upscaling methods.
The first titles to implement this new library are Marvel's Wolverine from Insomniac Games and Ghost of Yōtei from Sucker Punch Productions. Both games are receiving patches today to include QSSR as an additional graphics option.
Developers expressed enthusiasm for the rollout. Insomniac Games noted that QSSR provides extra clarity to complex environments like Madripoor and Shinjuku, offering a taste of the PS5 Pro experience. Sucker Punch Productions highlighted that the technology delivers a level of temporal stability that was previously impossible on the PS5 console.
Sony intends to make QSSR available to all PlayStation developers, aiming to see these AI-guided improvements across a wide range of future titles.
