AI Infrastructure Boom: Gartner Forecasts $2.67 Trillion in Spending for 2026
The expansion of artificial intelligence is evolving into a massive global economic undertaking. Gartner reports that the build-out of AI data centers could represent the largest infrastructure project in human history. Global AI spending is projected to hit $2.67 trillion in 2026, a figure nearly equivalent to the combined military budgets of all nations.
Infrastructure as the Primary Driver
The lion's share of investment is flowing into hardware rather than software. Gartner estimates that in 2026, infrastructure—encompassing AI-optimized servers, data center services, networking components, AI accelerators, and end-user devices—will account for approximately $1.484 trillion. This represents 56% of total AI spending. Notably, rising memory prices have yet to dampen demand from hyperscalers and cloud providers.
Gartner analyst John-David Lovelock describes the scale of this expansion in stark terms, calling the build-out of AI data center capacity "the largest infrastructure project humanity has ever undertaken." The growth trajectory is steep: from $1.787 trillion in 2025, the market is expected to surge to $3.637 trillion by 2027, more than doubling in just two years.
Economic Scale Comparison
To put these figures into perspective, the projected $2.67 trillion in 2026 exceeds Italy's 2025 GDP of $2.55 trillion. It also represents roughly 92.5% of global military expenditures, which SIPRI estimates at $2.887 trillion. While software, AI services, and cybersecurity are growing, they remain secondary to the massive physical infrastructure requirements driving the market.
