A Scale Worthy of the Series' Culmination: Ace Combat 8: Wings of Theve

In the Ace Combat series, the primary vantage point for experiencing war has usually been the fighter cockpit—hearing squadmates' voices over the radio and completing missions via briefings. While those cockpits harbored thrilling narratives, there was a limit to how deeply players could truly know the people flying alongside them. Seven years after its predecessor, Ace Combat 8: Wings of Theve makes a concerted effort to bridge that gap, bringing players closer to their comrades through a more personal, cinematic lens.

Cinematic Presentation as a New Standard for Immersion

The expanded emphasis on cinematic presentation is a defining feature of Ace Combat 8: Wings of Theve. Previously, squadron members were often limited to radio voices or static portraits; now, they are rendered as vivid 3D characters. With first-person cutscenes that allow players to manually shift their gaze, the narrative feels less like a briefing and more like a movie. War is no longer viewed exclusively from inside the cockpit; players now experience life on aircraft carriers and ground bases, feeling the weight of the conflict outside the flight seat.

This intimacy extends to the Joker Squadron. Rather than being mere tactical assets, your wingmen are characters with distinct personalities—a former teacher, a rock enthusiast, and a civilian girl. Watching them share meals or grieve together in cutscenes builds a genuine bond. This emotional investment makes the return of the squadron command system, seen in Ace Combat 5, feel much more impactful. Using the D-pad to issue orders becomes a matter of tactical necessity and moral weight, especially when deciding whether to prioritize mission objectives or assist a struggling ally in the heat of battle.

A Scale That Delivers on Its Promise

Brand Director Kazutoki Kono promised the largest campaign in the series' history, and Ace Combat 8: Wings of Theve delivers. With 30 main missions—10 more than Ace Combat 7—the game offers an immense playtime that covers every classic archetype: dogfights, superweapon engagements, stealth missions, and low-altitude tunnel runs.

However, such scale brings challenges. The narrative necessity of the FCU defending its territory against the Republic of Sotoa leads to a significant amount of ground-attack missions. While the pacing is expertly managed—often following a taxing ground assault with a high-octane aerial duel—the sheer density of ground targets can be overwhelming. In missions involving massive fleets, selecting a specific target with the Triangle button can become a tedious chore. Even the highly anticipated land battleships, while imposing at first, can eventually feel like oversized, moving targets amidst the chaos.

The Ultimate Test: Elite Encounters

The pinnacle of the combat experience lies in the encounters with Lux Lunae, the elite unit of the Sotoa Air Force. Led by the formidable Shadow 22, these pilots utilize advanced maneuvers like the Kulbit to pressure the player, making them incredibly difficult to engage even on Normal difficulty. In these high-stakes duels, the squadron command mechanics become essential, requiring the player to coordinate wingmen to isolate and eliminate these elite threats.

Ace Combat Online: The Long-Term Flight

Beyond the single-player campaign, Ace Combat Online offers a persistent experience similar to the structure of GTA Online. During testing, the game showcased two primary modes: Co-op Assault (PvE) and Co-op Warfare (PvP). With character customization, a shop for aircraft and cosmetics, and a clear progression system, it provides a robust foundation for long-term engagement, even if the full breadth of its content is still being realized.

Verdict

Ace Combat 8: Wings of Theve is an ambitious achievement that successfully transforms a flight combat simulator into an epic military drama. Despite the occasional fatigue caused by heavy ground-target missions and target-selection clunkiness, the game's scale, cinematic depth, and refined flight mechanics make it a standout. It is a journey that makes every sortie with your squadron feel meaningful.

  • Strengths: Massive 30-mission campaign; deep character development and squadron bonding; enhanced cinematic immersion; refined flight and combat mechanics.
  • Weaknesses: High proportion of ground-attack missions; clunky target switching in dense environments; occasional pacing issues due to mission variety.
