Ace Combat 8: Wings of Theve — Scale and Depth for the Series

The most striking feature of the new entry is its unprecedented scale. While Ace Combat 7 featured 20 main missions, Wings of Theve delivers 30 primary missions (excluding the prologue). This fulfills the vision of director Kazutoki Kono to create the largest and most content-rich narrative in the franchise's history.

The narrative approach has shifted from observing war through a cockpit window to a more immersive experience. Players now encounter squadmates as detailed 3D characters in cinematic scenes that take place on aircraft carriers and ground bases. This evolution makes the bond with the squadron feel tangible; you aren't just listening to voices over the radio, but witnessing the human side of combat.

The squad command system, reminiscent of Ace Combat 5, has been modernized. Players can issue orders regarding special weaponry or request cover, which becomes vital during intense dogfights. The campaign also features high-stakes duels against elite enemy pilots, such as the Lux Lunae group led by Shadow 22. These adversaries utilize advanced maneuvers, including post-stall turns, making them formidable opponents.

Beyond the single-player campaign, the game introduces Ace Combat Online. This mode offers a separate progression system and includes various modes like PvE Co-op Assault and PvP Co-op Warfare. The inclusion of season passes and cosmetic items suggests a long-term live-service approach for the online component.

While the scale is massive, the game retains classic elements like low-altitude stealth missions through narrow tunnels and large-scale ground support operations. Although the sheer number of ground targets in certain missions can be taxing, the climactic final battles and the musical score provide a powerful sense of catharsis.
