ACE COMBAT 8 Tops October 2026 Sales, while Final Fantasy Resonance Leads in Total Units

The Japanese gaming market saw a significant shift in October 2026, driven by a wave of new releases. According to the latest data from Famitsu, ACE COMBAT 8: WINGS OF THEVE claimed the top spot for software sales, while Final Fantasy Resonance emerged as a massive multi-platform hit, leading the charts in total units sold across all platforms.

Famitsu has released the sales data for domestic Japanese home console software (physical copies only) and hardware for the period between September 28 and October 25, 2026. The report highlights a highly competitive month, with new titles accounting for eight of the top ten software positions.

Software Sales: ACE COMBAT 8 and the Final Fantasy Phenomenon

The software rankings were led by ACE COMBAT 8: WINGS OF THEVE, released on October 2 for PlayStation 5. The title sold 85,729 units, securing the number one position. Following it in second place was Nintendo Switch Sports Resort on Nintendo Switch 2, with 64,632 units sold.

While ACE COMBAT 8 holds the single-platform lead, Final Fantasy Resonance proved to be the month's true commercial powerhouse when considering multi-platform performance. Released on October 22 for Nintendo Switch 2, PlayStation 5, and Nintendo Switch, the title appeared in the top ten across all three platforms: 4th on Nintendo Switch 2 (52,268 units), 5th on PS5 (50,452 units), and 7th on Nintendo Switch. Combined, Final Fantasy Resonance sold 133,000 units, making it the effective leader in total monthly sales.

Hardware Performance and Market Trends

In the hardware sector, the Nintendo Switch 2 maintained its lead with 92,266 units sold. The PlayStation 5 followed in second place with 51,354 total units sold. Notably, the vast majority of PS5 sales—approximately 50,000 units—were attributed to the Digital Edition, reflecting a strong consumer preference for digital-only hardware configurations.

Upcoming Releases and Year-End Outlook

As the market moves into November, anticipation is building for several major titles. High-profile releases scheduled for the coming month include The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time on Nintendo Switch 2 (November 4) and Grand Theft Auto VI on PlayStation 5 (expected November 19). These upcoming releases are expected to drive significant momentum as the industry enters the busy year-end shopping season.
