A beautiful compromise: Why LEGO Skylines won't feature brick-by-brick building
The developers at Iceflake Studios, the minds behind Cities: Skylines 2 and Surviving the Aftermath, have shared insights into the construction mechanics of their upcoming title LEGO Skylines. While many LEGO enthusiasts dream of building every structure piece by piece, the team has decided to prioritize gameplay flow over granular simulation.
The idea of true brick-by-brick building was indeed considered during the early stages of development. However, as producer Joanna Ronkanen explained during a demo at Gamescom, the team realized that assembling LEGO models using a mouse and keyboard could become an exhausting task for players. To illustrate the complexity, she pointed out that even a simple LEGO park bench can consist of roughly 50 individual bricks—a level of micro-management that would be impractical when managing an entire city.
As a result, the developers have settled on what Ronkanen calls a "quite beautiful compromise." Instead of manual assembly, players will work with modular prefabs. These structures can be extensively customized with various add-ons, such as flowerbeds, letterboxes, or hot tubs, allowing for visual variety without sacrificing the pace of the city-building experience.
That said, game director Lasse Liljedahl offered some reassurance regarding the depth of the LEGO experience. He emphasized that customization is a core pillar of the game and hinted that more elaborate building features will be introduced later in the game's lifecycle. While there is much anticipation for potential modding support to allow for even deeper construction, both Paradox Interactive and Iceflake Studios stated that no such solutions are currently being discussed.
